Whaling

Whaling is a type of cyber attack where criminals target high-ranking people like CEOs or other important people in an organization. They do this by sending an email that looks like it’s from somebody the target knows and trusts, like their boss or a colleague. The email usually looks very convincing and might even have the same writing style as the person it’s pretending to be.

The criminals try to trick the target into doing something like giving them sensitive information or transferring them money. They might ask the target to click on a link or download a file that looks innocent but really infects their computer with a virus.

It’s called “whaling” because the criminals are trying to catch a big fish - like a whale. It’s important to be wary of emails that come from unknown or suspicious sources, and to double-check with the supposed sender if something seems off.
