Smishing (SMS Phishing)

Smishing, also known as SMS phishing, is a type of cyber attack that is carried out using text messages. Just like with email phishing, smishing is a means of tricking unsuspecting users into handing over sensitive information, such as passwords or credit card details.

The attackers will usually send a text message that appears to come from a reputable source, such as a bank or a retailer. This message will contain a link that the user is encouraged to click on, either to confirm their account details or to claim a prize. However, this link will usually take the user to a fake website, where they will be prompted to enter their sensitive data.

To protect yourself from smishing attacks, it’s important to be wary of any unsolicited text messages that you receive. If you are unsure whether a message is legitimate, do not click on any links or provide any personal information. Instead, contact the supposed sender using a trusted method, such as their official website or telephone number. Remember that reputable companies will never ask you to provide sensitive information via text message.
