RFID Skimming

RFID skimming is when bad guys use high-tech tools to steal your credit card data remotely without your knowledge. They can use a device called an RFID reader to scan the radio waves from your credit card, which contains a tiny computer chip and antenna. This reader can then capture the data in the card’s magnetic stripe and/or read the data stored on the chip, like your credit card number, name, and expiration date.

This can happen if a person gets too close to you with a reader or if you unknowingly use a compromised ATM or payment terminal that has been rigged with a skimming device. Once the thieves have your data, they could use it to make unauthorized purchases or even create a counterfeit card that looks like yours.

To protect yourself from RFID skimming, you can use sleeves or wallets that are made with special materials that block the radio waves from your card. You can also keep an eye on your accounts and report any suspicious activity to your bank immediately. And be careful where you use your credit card and who is around you when you make purchases.
